Our story
Poolhall was founded in 2021 by Matthew Tonks to show recruitment can be done thoughtfully, strategically and with genuine care.
Being independent means we answer to our clients and candidates, not a franchise target. Run from Grosvenor House on St Pauls Square in Birmingham, we’ve kept our roots in the West Midlands while helping people find roles the length of the country.
With around 30 years of combined experience across our three sectors, we know the work, the markets and the people, and we treat every introduction like it matters. Because it does.

Founder
Matthew founded Poolhall to do recruitment differently, built on honesty, hard work and genuine relationships. With over a decade in the industry, he specialises in Manufacturing and Construction and leads the team’s quality-first, ethical approach.
Marketing Specialist
Sam looks after Poolhall’s brand and marketing and also recruits across marketing and digital roles. With ten years’ experience and a marathon runner’s discipline, he keeps our voice clear, consistent and genuinely human.
